Payroll Tax Extension Bill Puts Money in Taxpayers Pockets and Boosts Wireless Service

What does the payroll tax cut extension have to do with your broadband service? Well, a lot actually. According to a Tampa Bay Times  article, the recent decision by congress to auction spectrum to wireless companies could lead to faster wireless connections. According to the article, “if a compromise bill completed Thursday by Congress is approved as expected by this weekend, the result will eventually be faster connections for smartphones, iPads and other data-hungry mobile devices.” Now that the bill has been passed by both houses of congress, the legislation will head over to the White House for the President’s signature.

But, how will this bill revolutionize wireless service? Spectrum auctions. The auctions laid out in this bill will help free up spectrum that wireless carriers desperately need to relieve congestion on their networks. More spectrum means that mobile devices used by hospitals, schools and small businesses will function more reliably. It will also allow wireless companies the opportunity to invest in building out networks that will support the next generation of wireless technologies and also continue adding jobs. Without adequate access to spectrum, it’s clear that the full potential of mobile broadband which powers many of the apps that you and I have come to rely upon would not be fully realized.

Citizens for a Digital Future applauds Congress’ bipartisan decision to work together to find a solution and we hope that the President will also see the many benefits offered by auctioning off unused spectrum as an effective way to grow innovation and growth of wireless  companies.  Stay tuned for more updates!
