Today starts the Chinese year of the Dragon. An article from The International Business Times says the Dragon “… is a symbol of good fortune and intense power in Eastern culture.” According to ancient teachings “The Dragon is larger than life and its appearance means that big things are to come,” and that “the Year of the Dragon is a flowing river, not a stagnant lake, so things happen quickly earlier in the year.” This year, the power of the Dragon is expected to be felt throughout all parts of life, including the economy.
In recent years, China’s economic leadership has increased with immense speed, especially in the tech world. What will the year of the Dragon mean for the fastest growing sectors of the global economy, most of which are technology based? Will the year of the Dragon prove true to the ancient Chinese prophecy creating a year of economic success, or will fortune fall on the side of another country, perhaps the United States? Will we be able to out innovate our Asian friends?
China’s success in the year of the Dragon may or may not depend on ancient Chinese prophecy but nonetheless it will be interesting to watch the inevitable tech “arms race” to create the newest, fastest, and most efficient technology that is sure to take place between global tech-leaders like the U.S. and China.
Happy Chinese New Year!
