Rural and underserved regions in Georgia and Alabama have a reason to celebrate. Last week, Vice President Joe Biden announced recipients of federal stimulus funding dedicated towards expanding broadband deployment and accessibility.
One organization that received funding was the Appalachian Valley Fiber Network, which was awarded grant money to carry out its plan to bring broadband connectivity to consumers and businesses in Georgia and Alabama. Jerry Shearin of the Appalachian Valley Fiber Network emphasized the importance of broadband in unserved regions. “Broadband and Internet technology is the superhighway of the 21st century,” Shearin explained, voicing that Appalachian Valley Fiber Network is “building the interstate,” to offer connectivity across the region.
Projects like the Appalachian Valley Fiber Network will make broadband a reality for local economies, communities and small businesses, which will benefit from increased access to high-speed Internet. CDF looks forward to witnessing the execution of the Appalachian Valley Fiber Network’s plans to build out networks to connect underserved communities to the technology of the 21st century and the future.
